Sketchbook Work
This is my final piece - i composed a light box with borders to separate the images. However for the final exhibition at school, i will only be displaying black and white images, because the school deemed some of the photos as inappropriate due to the ‘nudity’. This was understandable, as there are younger years viewing this. Nevertheless, i am happy with the outcome of my final piece - the blank space in the middle is where i am putting an iPad to show my two animations. Below the final piece of the box, these are photos of what i will be displaying at the final exhibition at school.
For my final piece, I used a combination of animations and digital photos. I originally began taking photos on the film camera but then changed to digital because I wanted the photos to be in colour. I constructed a large frame with A5 prints and made 2 animations; the first animation was sequence photography, that focused on the concept of materialism which links with the feeling of loneliness. Many people within contemporary youth culture spend the majority of their time buying material possessions and going on social media. Personally, I think that the feeling of loneliness only grows when people avoid their feelings by consuming themselves in materialism. I developed the concept of materialism and loneliness by gradually removing clothes and all the excess objects in a room. I wanted to gradually create quite a minimalistic image. By stripping someone away from all their material possessions, they become more vulnerable and aware of themselves. Materialism acts as an obstacle from people being able to grow mentally. When the animation became minimalistic, it showed how the subject was then forced to reflect on themselves and to try and feel comfortable in an empty room. I was inspired by the artist Bruno Munari, in his project, ‘seeking comfort in an uncomfortable chair’, who explore
I like how the individuals are bordered off from each other in the frame, yet are all connected together through the feelings of loneliness. In this project I wanted to focus on how being alone can often make people feel uncomfortable - so i explored various positions where the subject looks uncomfortable and alone. I first experimented by painting acrylic over the top of the subject as i wanted to focus on removing something from the photo. By removing the subject, it created a blank (negative) space of the subjects figure. This created a sense of emptiness. I wanted to experiment like this, as when i attended the UAL workshop in the half term, we focused on removing and adding objects or people to photos which intrigued me. I think that the borders enhance the concept of loneliness because it isolates each subject and presents them as almost trapped in a small cube. I think that printing the A5 was better than A3 paper, as it presents them as small which to me shows how loneliness can often make you feel insignificant and small in comparison to everyone else. Although they are isolated and alone, they are all connected with the feeling of loneliness.
For my final piece, i have constructed a large cube frame, with borders. I used these borders to present my photos. I have also place LED lights inside the frame to highlight some of the photos. Although I am pleased with the outcome, I would like to experiment with the presentation more; as I was under time constraints it was hard to finalise my idea. But in the future I will definitely be exploring this idea further; possibly create a box with images inside that are lit by Led lights - the person would have to put their head inside the box and look around at all the images.
